Today marks the birthday of Antoine Lavoisier, one of the key figures in chemistry history and often referred to as ‘the father of modern chemistry’. This short graphic takes a look at some of his key contributions to chemical understanding and the system of naming chemical substances we still use today.
Even in the depths of winter, wildfires have been raging in some U.S. states. There were over 66,000 wildfires across the U.S. last year, and this month’s edition of Periodic Graphics in C&EN magazine takes a look at the products of these large-scale combustion reactions, as well as the effects that these products can have on our health. Here’s something a little different for the Christmas period! It might be a little late, given Christmas was yesterday, but I did take the opportunity to play around with some chemistry at the Christmas table, and this is the result. Though it certainly doesn’t match the production values of the ACS Reactions or Chemistry in Context videos, hopefully it’s still a bit of entertaining festive chemistry whilst you’re recovering from your Christmas Day exertions!
Recently, some of my classes have been revising types of chemical reactions, which inevitably set me thinking about how to represent them visually in an easy to understand way. These are the first few posters I’ve come up with – each has a large icon representative of the reaction type, as well as a short description of the reaction, and an example.
