December is here, and that means it’s Chemistry Advent season! It’s been a few years since I’ve put together a new edition, but it’s back this year with the theme “A Festive Food Journey Around the World.”
2020’s been a long old year, and we all feel a bit tired and jaded in this, what feels like the 274th day of March. So I’ll confess that the thought of a month of evenings staying up until midnight to post Chemistry Advent instalment didn’t fill me with wild enthusiasm. Having run a Chemistry Advent for the past 6 years, this year I’ve decided to take a break of sorts.
We’re now 16 periodic tables into this year’s #ChemistryAdvent – as you’ll be fully aware if you’ve been following along! A whole range of topics have been covered so far – from a breakdown of elements in the human body to a rundown of some rejected element names.
It’s that time of the year again – here’s another chemistry advent countdown, this year with an #IYPT2019 theme! Over the next 24 days, there’ll be a new periodic table every day, highlighting a variety of interesting facts or curiosities relating to the elements.

This year’s Chemistry Advent calendar has only 7 days to go! If you’ve missed it so far, this year we’re building a timeline of key contributors to our understanding of chemistry, from the beginnings of modern chemistry in 1780 all the way through the present day. Recognise any of the scientists featured so far? Find out more about them all by following along here.
December is just about upon us, which means it’s time for another year of the Chemistry advent calendar! After several years of looking at the chemistry behind Christmas festivities, I’ve decided to do something slightly different (but hopefully equally entertaining) this year.
